I'm just wondering, I'm sitting here thinking about how nice it would be to own a 6" bubinga tom to complete my kit. I know a few people here have them but were they difficult to have them ordered? Also what is the depth of these 6" toms and the number of lugs? One more question, were they priced similarly to the 8" toms or is there a premium paid for being specially ordered. My now 7 piece kit, would turn into a delightful 8. My bubinga kit is in the "Scorched Copper Burst" finish. Thanks to Jay, I was able to get my 8" tom a few months ago.

Oh, one more question again. How long was the waiting time before you had it in your hands? It really doesn't matter, but I'm just curious.

Thanks,
Dennis

Forum member,Gongbass, has gotten Tama to build him several 6" toms in the past. They will build anything provided you are willing to pay. I know that he worked with Jay at Tama to get them to build his toms. The general size is 6x6 and it's a 4 lug per side tom. I think Gongbass had to pay a premium for the custom sizes. I have a great guy at Interstate Music named John Torrol in the customer service dept. He has a few contacts at Tama in Bensalem, I bet he could help you. He has gotten Tama to build a quite a few custom drums lately. Here is is contact info..

You won't get many answers from Tama directly but the dealers surely can. I hope this helps you.

Beautiful kit you got there. I love that finish and the set-up looks comfortable.

Thanks sandman for the info, I really appreciate it. What I might do is talk to my local Five Star shop first, they sell truck loads of Tama equipment and also work with Hoshino in Bensalem. If they say it can't be done, I'll definitely use the contact information you provided.

I find my configuration very accessible and easy to play. I have several kits and have them all set up basically the same. Using a pair of ride cymbals and the amount of drums I sometimes use, it took a little time to get to a very comfortable layout for these old bones, lol.

Thanks again,
Dennis

Just my 2 cents worth. I have found that the smaller toms have a limited tuning range. If you are going to spend the nickels for add ons, especially for a drum with a higher note, why not look at Octobans? (No, I don't have em,...but I would like em if I could afford em.) Happy

You would be suprised at the tonality and resonance of a 6" tom. I have several that are just as melodic and wide open sounding as 8" and 10" toms. It all comes down to head selection and tuning. Most drummers with 6" toms tend to try to tune them up as high as they can just to get a high pitch out of them. Over tightening will choke the drum and cut off any resonance. I tune 6" drums just like all my other toms...tune to the fundemental pitch of the shell and it will sound great. No 2 ply heads either...single ply is the only way to go.

Sandman knows me pretty damn well!!! Clap He's right. I have a 6" x 6" SC Bubinga, 6" x 6" SC Performer Birch (maybe the only one in America), a 6" x 6" SC Maple and a 5.5" x 6" SC Maple Concert Tom. The three double headed toms have a Gauger RIMS mounts and the Concert Tom has the Bracket drilled to the shell. They all have their own subtle characteristics but they do sound pretty similar. THe tuning range is limited and I would also add the RIMS mounts do little to nothing for resonance but its the 6" tom sound I was after and you can only get it from a 6"!

Listen to Neil Peart's kit now. HE lost the 6" and tries to tune his 8" up in that register and all his high toms sound chocked and like tin cans.

As for getting one made I have always dealt with the great Jay at Hoshino but I would guess you could ask your local drum store to contact Tama and get an answer. AS for wait time, most of my custom drums have taken @ 3-4 months. Only the full candy apple red Neil Peart Replica kit took about 5. Hope that helps! You have a great color kit, a 6" would look sweet!

Thanks gongbass. After playing forty some years with a rack tom no smaller than a 12", I really didn't see the use for a 10" tom. Then last year I got the itch for an 8 and here I go again. Jay helped me out a couple of times before, including the 8" I now have. I appreciate you stopping by with the information. It took me a while to get use to the tuning on the 8" tom to be able to get a nice resonant tone out of it, and they chock up very quickly too.

We'll see what happens. I'll be at the drum shop on Friday for the Sabian Tour and I'll inquire about the 6" tom then. Being Friday, Dave or someone else there could possible give Hoshino a call if the Sabian event doesn't have everybody pulling their hair out.

Thanks again,
Dennis

Yep, I know you pretty damn well, don't I?Dance You are very correct about Neil's current sound. He tunes the 7x8 up so high, it just goes "CLUNK" when he hits it. His Tama and Ludwig kits have the best high tom sounds to date. Oh yeah, I just bought a Tama Starclassic Birch Gong bass Drum in Red Sparkle Fade. Dance I think you and I may have the only two in existance. I am slowly catching up to you, bro!!!!! Better look out!Shifty
