I think that I've got this set dialed-in just right with this setup: Die Cast hoops and suspension mounts are the way to go - no question! Best head setup: for the toms - Evans G1's - top & bottom (NOT G2's -they choke 'em up) My suggestion is to buy a used Starclassic tom and cannabalize it for heads, hoops and suspension mounts - put the other hoops and whatever heads you have back on the Starclassic and resell it on ebay - It's a LOT cheaper than ordering new heads/hoops & mounts from Tama. (that's what I did :)

The stripper I use comes in a one gallon can from your local Home Depot or Lowes' and it's called "Super Stripper" - It took a full gallon to strip-down these three drums (bass and two toms). Paint it on real heavy and let it sit - the floor tom took like 5 applications to get it to where the sanding started. You'll know when it's time to start sanding when all the shiny lacquer is off, and the underlying wood is a muddy brown color. THATS when you start sanding. (use a non-orbital hand sander with 220 grit sandpaper, then 600, then 1500, and lastly, 4000 grit. (This might seem redundant, but the 4000 grit gives the wood a shimmering, quilted appearance that even Tama didn't do at the factory). I then applied 3 coats of spray-on gloss "bar lacquer" - It's not the mile-deep gloss of the factory finish, but the figuring of the wood is MUCH more evident this way. It's a lotta work, but do it once and have a drumset you can drool over for the rest of your life.
