The drum was used in a clinic by Tim Alexander around 2005.

It is a 5.5 x 14" metal snare drum. Serial number 000544. No model number.

I am trying to determine what the drum shell is made out of. I have looked in some Tama catalogs around that time period and it looks similar to a stainless steel or aluminum snare drum(PSS or PAL models). However the drum is very heavy, leading me to believe it is titanium. The drum is rolled, but is still very very heavy.

Does anybody know what kind of snare Tim Alexander was playing when he was doing clinics around that time? The drum was custom ordered for Tim by the drum shop where the clinic was held. He requested this specific drum to be purchased from Tama for the clinic.

Um, isn't titanium supposed to be a light material?

If it was purchased by the dealer for the clinic, it was probably not custom, but hammered steel as you mentioned. Since it is a 5.5x14, it is probably PA455HN…this is a 3 mm hand hammered steel shell, so it would be heavier than the standard 1 mm shell used on the steel shell Tama “Soprano” line of drums.

The shell is not hammered. It's a smooth shell. It may be stainless steel, but its not hammered.

As far as weight goes, it's VERY heavy for a rolled shell. It feels like a cast snare, although it's not a cast 3mm shell. I know that for sure. I has the rolled edges.

Is it maybe the Brass shell? Tama have used a 1.5mm brass shell for quite a few years now, and the finish doesn't look like the typical gold/yellow of brass. The 1.5mm makes a significant difference to the weight...
