I just bought a Tama Starclassic Maple Kit in Piano Black a few weeks ago that another customer ordered and backed out on at the last minute. The kit is only a 5 piece which is too boring for me so I had to order more drums to go with it. I just ordered an 8x7 tom, 11x14 tom, 16x18 floor tom, and a 14x20 Gong Bass Drum! Now I have to learn how to be patient!!! How do you guys do it that have ordered add-on drums?? How long was your wait times???

I ordered 5 pieces in 2004 (2 rack toms, 2 floor toms, 1 kick) and it only took 3 months. I ordered another bass drum and an 8" tom on Dec. 13,2008 and they came in last week!

I've been waiting for 5 months now on my (officialy discontinued) Tama Rockstar suspended tom 16x14 in VTS. Biting nails seems to help! :P My tom should come in this month...

While your waiting, you should learn to enjoy playing what you currently have. Lots of drums aren't essential to have a good time playing, although big kits are cool. Personally, after years of playing a 12 piece i am back to a standard old 5 piece, and I like it just as much!

I agree, a 4 piece set can sometimes even make you play creativer then bigger sets. I often play on a 4 piece jazz set by gretsch and I love playing it. Sounds good too.

Hey Sandman, what's up... you didn't order a 6x6 tom for the kit??? :(
Well, congrats anyway! I haven't ordered anything in awhile, but I still feel your pain, I'm not sure what's worse waiting for add-ons or waiting for a whole new kit. And if your like Gongbass or myself, the anticipation of getting them will drive you crazy, but when the new stuff finally does arrive it will sit in the boxes for a few months before you even think about setting them up! I took delivery of a set of 4 concerts toms (6", 8", 10", & 12") for my DCF Maple kit in January of this year, custom made, waited 7 months for them, but still haven't got stands so they are nicely stacked in the corner of my studio and look great, but I don't have any idea how they sound yet, LOL!!!

No, but I really thought about it, ProfessorJr.!!! I won't get into the big kit, small kit argument. At my age, I play what I like and feel most comfortable with. For me, a big kit is necessary for creativity. The Tama Kit was ordered as a 4 piece shell pack without snare. 5 piece kits are fine...for some..not me. After I received the drums, I immediately ordered more drums to round it out. I will enjoy it as a 5 piece until my add-on drums get here. I ordered an 8x7 tom, 11x14 tom, 16x18 floor tom, and a 14x20 Gong Bass Drum in the last 2 weeks. I am just at the beginning of the long long long wait. It's killing me already.
I wished Gongbass still posted here. I wanted to share the news of my first tama kit!!

Gongbass is still here. We had twins @ 7 months ago as well as being absurdly busy with sessions, composing work and live shows. Long of the short, don't have the same amount of time to kill as before. After they redid the forum I was bummed that they took away the drag and drop type feature with pics so I guess I kind of drifted off after that. Congrats on the Tama kit!!! Finally!!! I also checked out the Drums Under Pressure website and glad to see the NP kit is being painted!! I have a bunch of new drums to show everyone, so in a few weeks I'll get to taking new pics and do one big update!!!

I started to laugh to myself when I started ordering all the extra toms and gong bass drum and thought Gongbass would be proud!!! I am so thrilled to finally have a set of Starclassics. I can see now how addictive it is!!!! I totally understand your mind set. :) Yes. my NP Shells are off being painted by a professional. I had surgery on one of my hands and won't be able to use my right hand most of the summer so I tapped a friend to get paint the shells for me. I sent my shells off in April. Alas, my NP kit is finally getting back into motion. Share the drum porn over as soon as you can...I need my drum porn fix. Glad to hear you well and look forward to chatting with you again.

Hey Gongbass-The hand is going to be fine. I have been going to rehab 3 times a week and the therapist ladies are awesome at helping hands heal quick. I can actually still play the drums daily as long as I go easy and don't bash hard. I swtiched to traditional grip to change my range of motion. I found a great aid in the Triplet Drum Glove invented by Jimmy Lento. I bought a couple of pair after seeing his NAMM presentation on youtube. The gloves are useful for hand injuries like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or Authritis. I have been wearing them everytime I play and boy they really alleviate the pain of trying to firmly grip a stick. I have worried my whole life about what happens if I can't drum and when you're nightmare becomes a reality, it scares the hell out of you. I don't drum for money or fame, I do it for myself to keep my sanity. No matter how life changes, drums have been the only constant in my life since I was 7. Through bad times and good, Drums have always been there for me. I just don't feel like a complete person without drums. OK, now I am getting philospical but when faced with a potential physical issue, it makes you reflect.
I bought my first Tama kit the very day after I began Therapy on my hand. The drums gave me the extra push to take care of my hands and do exactly as the doctor and therapist told me. As you may recall, I stopped buying big brand drums many moons ago after the drum building bug hit me. I haven't had a brand name kit in over 10 years since my big disappointment with my last DW kit. The Tamas have renewed my faith in big name drums though. Easy to tune, great tone and resonancee. It was so easy to get the sound in my head to transcribe to the Tamas, I couldn't believe how well they tune up and hold the tuning. Yes, I understand your love of Tamas now, Gongbass!!!

Hey Sandman, the wait for custom gear is always an "experience". Obviously I've been through it many times!!! Recently I just received my Red Sparkle Fade Octobans (#'s 3,4,5,6) which look amazing. Also took delivery of yet another couple add on drums for my Exotix 5 Red Viking kit. If you remember I had a gong bass made to match the kit a few years back, well Jay was able to convince Tama Japan to make me a 5" x 10" Tymp Tom and 5.5" x 12" Snare drum. Luckily they had enough of the Scandinavian Birch left to make them (shells are bubinga with Scan Birch exterior)! They look and sound amazing! Last custom drum I'm waiting on is ....... a Bubinga gong bass in custom Dark stardust fade to match my most current B/B kit. Couldn't do a B/B gong but Jay was able to get a bubinga gong bass in matching color. Supposed to be in in the next couple weeks. Can't wait for it!!! The wait process usually goes like this for me: 1) I get all excited when I get the OK from Japan on whatever custom drum(s) I'm ordering. 2) It usually takes a few weeks to get prices sorted out with Japan and Hoshino USA 3) I try and not think too much about them after the first few weeks. 4) After about 2.5-3 months I start to get antsy and bug Jay "when are they coming... huh? huh?" 4) Once I get the whatever I'm waiting for I usually think "why was I so impatient???". Although there are quite a few drums I've had made that I still get psyched over: all my 6" toms, the NP kit, The Exotix add ons, etc... I really think I'm done for awhile (I always say that), I have 12 kits and 11 of them are really extensive. I've literally exhausted any special order requests I could dream up. Now if I could just convince Tama to make me some Koto drums!!!! I use samples for soundtrack work but would love to get some real ones!!!

It's a shame you are suffering from "Double Diaper Duty Disorder". It's a condition from have having twins. Symptoms are low back pain, hang nails, loss of sleep, frequent trips to local stores at all hours. I hear there is this new drug on the market. Look for commercials during the 6:00 P.M. National news on your local networks.

Lookin' good, bro! Like the lay-out of your kit. Looks comfy from the driver's seat. Love the Saluda Cymbals too. They are some great sounding cymbals and not overly expensive. Keep the drum porn coming. it's helping me pass the time while I wait on my 4 Starclassic drums.

Actually, they are Stagg Cymbals, but the same counts for those. Very cheap, don't sound bad at all. You can't really see it, but I have two Paiste Alpha Cymbals on my kit right now. I'm phasing out the Stagg's for a complete alpha serie! More pics soon, as promised!

Well, here you have it; some nice high-res quality shots of my kit including the new 16" tom. I'm so very happy with and really love the sight of it. I've been playing a little on it and really like my set-up. I want to thank Tama and especially Jeroen and Ruben from Hoshino Benelux for making this all happen! I'm extremely grateful for all the effort and time they put in this, and events like this clearly idicate that Tama is indeed one hell of a company! Keep up the good stuff! Below is just on pic, but you can click here to see the complete on my Flickr page. Thanks Tama!
