I found this kit on craigslist. Apparently, he's had the bearing edges recut by pros (I called to check). Tom sizes are 12, 13, 16 and bass is 24 x 18. It's a 4 piece.
He's asking $500 for it. I've been wanting a kit like this for a while...a quality 4 pc. with a 24'' bass but I'm not sure... I'll definitely give them a hear. Sound is more important to me than their "objective" worth but I may want to sell them one day and don't want to be way undercut.

The bass is 16*24. Granstar bass drums were only 16 in depth unless some idiot did a custom job.

Get it. What is cut? The sound for Granstar is killer when tuned up.

Try listen to Metallica Seattle 1989.

That's a Granstar Custom but its laquer versus wrap so the tone is the same.

If you dig that tone then there is no questions.

That's what I thought and when I said I assumed it was a 24x16 he looked at me funny. I haven't measured it.
I got it. I feel like I overpaid. The kit isn't in great shape but it's managable. The hardware is falling apart and he patched a cracked bass hoop. I suppose I could buy a new bass hoop...no biggie but for $500, I expect to get a quality used set. He wouldn't budge on the price though.
Once I heard it I had to have it. I replaced all the heads and even with the crappy tuning job I did it sound amazing. Very loud and responsive. Well worth the money even if I can't resell it for $500.

Congratz!

Can't you glue the bass hoop back together?

I still got 4 hoops to glue and paint.

What is wrong with the hardware in details?

Granstar drums are old and drummers these days just see an old kit. Most were not even born when Granstar were new. Back in the late '80s they were Starclassic Performer. Many drummers don't even know the correct size of Granstar drums. Every tom is Power size and 16 for bass drums in depth. The last 1+ year have given the 18 inch alot of boost so that is what drummers think is normal.

Granstar and Granstar Custom/Crestar difference is the wrap versus lauqer but once you tuned up the kit sings for years to come. Even if its ugly you can rewrap or paint it. That is one great thing to the Granstar line. The wrap on my kit looked very used but cleaned up rather well so it stays on.

Yeah, I measured it. It's a 24X16. The bass hoops were glued (reinforced with a piece of wood--they broke near the bottom).
As for the hardware, mostly the mountings on the floor tom legs slip and don't fasten properly. I've also had a bit of a hard time keeping it in tune. I spent about 1 hour last night tuning it and played it for about 1.5 hours tonight and it already is starting to sound out of tune. I don't play hard either. Could be partially due to the new heads but I put those on about a week ago and have re-tuned it about 3 times since. Here's are some pics of it (the above were the pics I pulled from craigslist). It's also missing all its badges since the first owner stripped it. I've ordered some vent grommets, since I doubt I'll be able to find badges for it cheaply/easily.
I may decide to wrap it. I'll probably try to match my snare (Java Sparkle). There're some flaws in the finish on the bass. I might try to sand and put wood putty in them. I kind of like the natural finish though.
