proper tuning.
alot of you guys talk about muffling as if its the only way to get a good sound, reality is that proper tuning w/o muffling will get you an even better sound.
i know its hard for alot of you to believe that anything short of a hydro with duct tape and a evans emad is gonnna sound like chit ~ but the truth is a G1/G1 will sound better... with proper tuning.

Depends on what sound you're after. A G1 or Amb sound great but will NEVER sound like a 2-ply muffled head no matter how you tune.
What's better is subjective.

that my friend is a huge understatement!
some ppl actually like the pizza box sound.
some ppl havent been playing long enough to develope an ear good enough to even know what a good sound is.
some ppl havent got a clue as to how to tune properly, reguardless of how long theye been playing.
...and of course ~ some ppl are just idiots...
(how can i get my drums to sound just like Portnoy's on the such and such CD?!)
now i personally could care less what your drums sound like, but i tend to bust a gut when some noobie explains how his Swingstars with Aquarian P2s, duct tape, tissues, and an emad on the reso sounds... so facking amazing!
.....no it dont!

True that some techniques are much more ghetto than others, but you can't dictate what sound somebody likes... even if it is the vastly unpopular and un-cool pizza box sound.

unfortunately it is easier for beginners to get the pizza box sound.
it takes quite a bit of tuning experience to get Ambs/Ambs to sound like Bonham's drums. most beginners and even experienced players dont have the patients for that sort of thing.
bass drum = 2 pillows
snare = tape & tissue (twice)
toms = o-ring and emad
in too many cases, laziness is to blame. hence... my swingstars with 3 rolls of duct tape sound amazing!

I'm not disagreeing with you about "some" people's ability, or lack of, to tune. I'm only saying the pizza box sound is completely valid if that's what you like, and appropriate in some cases. e.g. Classic rock. I agree with you that there's a right way and wrong way to get that sound, and tuning can go a long way. However if I'm some kid with no budget, low end drums, crap worn out heads, then "any way" to get a decent sound is the right way.
Even given expert tuning, Ambs (or G1s) will never have the same sound as 2-ply muffled heads. Their sound ranges can overlap but not be completely identical. Use of PIIs, studio rings, etc is completely valid as well. They certainly are not marketed for n00bs that can't tune.
Lighten up on the kids with tape on their skins. They'll figure it out, and at least they're enthusiastic.

Trail and error... It's how i got my heads to the sound that suite me without tape. It may be a case of puttin up with it cos i remember having overtones on my drums and i didn't really like it at first but then it grew on me. You'll hardly hear it if you're with a band, and you can EQ it anyway if you're recording.
EDIT: Ha. dood, no matter how much duct tape you put on there, it's still a rockstar which we all know is a quality kit! What kind of ring are you talking about? And how many ply are your heads? Faffolagyle2006-6-21 18:14:32
