You'd be surprised at how many professional drummers buy stagestars just to throw around and practice on. They make great little jazz kits.

Many years ago, I would have scoffed at such an idea. But then Tama
introduced the 'new' era of Rockstars, and it blew away my concept that
a cheap drum set could not sound good. The bottom line is that drum set
manufacturing has come such a long way over the years, that the
cheapest drum set made today, has the *capability* (please no one
misunderstand what I'm saying here) to sound more resonant and warm
than older Gretsch and Slingerland kits that people lauded back in the
50's to 70's. I mean, the shell construction is better, thinnger,
stronger, and bearing edges sharper and of course drum heads are made
much better these days. I'd put up a Stage Star against a good older
kit (if we're talking about jazz here). I mean, it's not on the level
of a Rick Marotta Yamaha or Hip Gig because of the materials used in
construction, but hey, if you need a good, cheap jazz kit for touring
with, yup, I'd do the whole Stage Star 4pc thing any day
Are Stagestars just small Swingstars or are they a different quality?

yes stagestars are cheaper swingstars in jazz sizes. its funny when people say how good stagestar is and at the same time hate swingstar
I like the Stagestars. Cool little kits.

I was going to get one as a second to keep at my band's practice space, but I
got a good deal on a new kit with cymbals and hardware on ebay, so I went
with that.

Yeah, stagestars are sweet practice kits. I have one that I use as a four-piece practice kit, and the bass drum is a BANGER! Very punchy. It sounds sweet mostly in acoustic or low-volume situations.

Just buy one and remove the wrap and lacquer the shell, the wood if
it's the same "quality" as the one on the new swingstar is blond (not
reddish as we are used to see with phil. mahogany), really good looking
with nice grain pattern...
I have a Midnight Blue Stagestar. I got it because it was affordable and, was a Tama. In the past few years I've tricked it OUT!!!! I've added an Iron Cobra flexi glide, a new hand hammered piccolo snare, new heads except on the bass, and new cymbals. My plan is get a lot of new hardware and cymbals, so when I get my new set, I wont pat an arm and a leg for accessories. I love the way it sounds! For the price, Stagestar can't be beat!!

Well, those aren't for New Year's. Those are my everyday balloons.
