I don't play drums. But I just got a silverstar set in a trade that I will keep in my studio for band practice and recordings. I would like it to have more of the jazz configuration for space and microphone conservation. Plus, most of the drummers I play with seem to prefer it, anyway, I want to lose a mounted tom. I assume the smaller one. Is there a way to do this with the stock mount rod? Or am I going to have a big mounting rod thing sticking up where the drum was? If so, what is the cheapest solution for a single tom mounted to the kick drum on this particular set?

You can't "lose" it. Just fold it in kind of parallel to the horizontal part of the tom holder. Oh, and by the way, put the bigger tom where the smaller one used to be.
Or, get a drummer to help you.
It's like a sauna in here.

You might also consider using the L-arm to mount a splash using TAMA's cymbal accessory or perhaps mount a cowbell on it?
