I recently picked up a 12 & 14" standard size, doubled headed toms and a 16" floor tom in midnight blue to go with my big concert tom kit. It all about options...

They are earlier versions with re-rings. They were more beat up than I was expecting, but should clean up decent.

So now the quest begins, where do I find a 10" and maybe an 8" to go with??

Also, the guy I bought them from still has the 13, 15 and an 18 floor, so if he decides to sell them, I may grab them as well....

Is there a big difference between the the thinner shells and the later thicker ones?

The older shells should be a bit more resonant and mellower, with the thicker shells having more projection, but is it really noticable?

Hi latzanimal. Congrats on your new toms.

The early Imperialstar drums from 1974 to about 1980 had the same thickness shells, but
went from a thick re-ring to a thin re-ring and finally no re-rings after about 1980 until
they first versions were discontinued around 1984?
I'm not sure if the thickness of the shell changed after 1981.
It was still listed as a 9 ply mahogany shell so I think not.

Thanks Yak. these are definitely early version with thick rings...

Probably makes finding a 10 & 8 even harder, yes?

I see them in Black on a regular basis, but not so much in Midnight blue.

Just keep scrolling the auction sites. They will turn up.
