Step one: Find a dealer you like

It may be that they have great service, or their shop smells nice, or the guy that runs it looks like Mr. Hooper and you finally remember how to get to Seseme Street...

It doesn’t matter, you just have to like them because they will be your partner on the magical journey that is Special ordering Tama Drums!! This is the most important step...the Dealer is your window to what you can get...and of course getting it. Do your homework...check the place out get to know the salesmen because you and your dealer want Wonder Twin level harmony!

WONDER TWIN POWERS ACTIVATE ---- "FORM OF DEALER" ---- "SHAPE OF GUY WHO WANTS DRUMS"

Step Two: Know what you want

We can’t read your mind…

neither can she...
What series do you want? Do you want a whole Kit? Is it a “Custom” Color? What sizes are they?

This link may help you with that

Catalogs Link

Or our general website

Tama Site Link

If you have a request that you don't see...just ask your dealer, some things can happen some things can’t...doesn’t hurt to ask.

Step Three: Get a Quote

You gotta know what this will cost you right? For every special/custom order we will provide your dealer with a quote and they will pass that info on to you…don’t bother coming to us directly for a quote because the only price we can give you is “List”...to get the most accurate price on your drums you should get your quote from your dealer. Regular sizes and colors from the price list will be current pricing

Step four: Make your decision and ORDER THEM ALREADY!

Tell your dealer you want them, make your deposit, and sit back and relax while your drums are being made!

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND!!

Please be PATIENT…all special order drums take 120 – 150 (and sometimes but rarely 180) days to be delivered from the date of order…we usually place orders with the factory once a month.

FEEL SPECIAL Your drums are being hand made especially for you, and when they arrive they will be more awesome than a Gorilla fight!

[img]http://bowlbyspeaks.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/70-the-most-awesome-picture-ever-taken.jpg" alt=""/>

Not everything can be done…sometimes a request is just not possible (like that Vin Deisel custom decal you wanted on your bass drum, I know, its heartbreaking) Your dealer will not mind calling us to find out if what you want can be done or not.

And as always if this did not answer your question…please feel free to post it here and someone will help you.

This was hilarious... you need to add a picture of a kid starring out the window for the "waiting game" part of the process! Think

So I just placed an order the other day, so now I begin the long waiting game. I was just wondering if there is a particular day each month that the order goes in to the factory or does is vary based on volume?

Doesn't make any difference. You will still wait months. Also, the emanations from the UCONN chem lab have been suspected of causing additional delays in TAMA shipments. Dance

That's what I figured. I was just wondering how long it would sit on someone's desk at ordering until it went and sat on someone else's desk at the factory. The last time I did a Tama special order was almost 10 years ago and I don't remember how long that took. I'll just have to practice patience I suppose! And yes, I hear the chemistry department is notorious for causing Tama delays.....that's why those of us in the BNS department who are also drummers keep our distance!

It depends...Hate to be so vague, but it really depends.

When we get the order from the dealer I know all us guys in sales/service personally walk the order to the all powerful drum guys.

and once they have it, it's sent overseas to the factory.

Part of it is we have to make sure we have enough stuff coming over around the same time...(you don't rent a Uhaul to move 1 box, just like we don't send a boat with just one drum)

so when the order is placed with the factory isn't really a set thing...we know you are waiting and don't want to keep you waiting any longer than we have to. You can't tell your friends how awesome it is before you have it!

The truth is...I'm 99.9% sure this part is factored into the entire wait time...It's pretty safe to say that, since you have the drum on order...you have 120 to 150 days to prepair the welcome banner for your new drums. I always see these set to come in at about 4 to 5 months after the order date, which is right on schedule. It's rare if an order goes over that time (even though it has happened in the past)

example...you ordered in October...it's pretty safe to say you will have it sometime in March, barring Disaster, Zombie apocolypse, alien invasion, or sea monster attack.

best thing to do?

keep talking to your dealer! I say in 3 or 4 months...ask for an update!

Thanks a lot Matthew! I appreciate the information. Tama is quite a large company and I know my wee snare drum is far from the company's greatest priority so I do appreciate your response. After 20 years of playing Tama, I refuse to go anywhere else, so I will just have to practice my patience and let the excitement build.....I'll have to get going on that banner!

I want to know how long do Tama keep their old finishes... I'm asking that because I'm planning to get a brand new SCM osmewhere next year but I don't like the finishes they have right now.. so I was maybe thinking about SCB but they think they discontinued that finish last year. So I want to know if I could still ask for that finish if it would be extra cash for a special order?
by the way I'll be ordering as individual drums(add ons)

thanx for the help guys

No upcharge for finishes usually if they can still be made, unless their unique sizes not in the price guide. There isn't necassarily a time frame for how long we'll keep them either, but rule of thumb is about 5 years.

while there is no upcharge for the finish...if you are making a whole kit, it would have to be as individual drums so it's likely you won't be able to get a kit at the price of a current shell pack.

it would be each drum billed as a separate line on the order, instead of a pre-made kit.

Thanks

Gong Basses are specifically in our Starclassic Bubinga Elite line.

all of them have 8 ply Bubinga Shells with an outer ply (9 total) of either Maple, Cordia, or Quilted Bubinga.

as for the color

the factory will do several colors not nessisarily offered in the Starclassic Bubinga Elite line, so Harvest Dusk Burst shouldn't be a problem.

I would talk to a Dealer to get a formal quote, this way you will know exactly what you are getting and how much it would be.

Would tama special order a 20" Bass Drum in the Superstar HD range? I'd love to get a 5 piece HD kit but with a 18 x 20.
