I think you'll find the current Imperialstars as well as the Swingstars have 1.6mm flanged hoops.
If the Imperialstars had 2.3mm hoops it would be written in the promos without a doubt.

My PDP CX tuned and sounded great with 1.6 mm hoops. Neither I or the current owner ever had a problem with warpage.

hard to believe. did you check them on a flat surface? thats the real test. i have even known new ones to be warped on new kits made with inconsistencies when checked on flat surfaces. mainly due to poor QC in manufacture from china. but happy for you that you enjoy your 1.6mm hoops.

I don't enjoy 1.6 mm hoops. As I said in the previous 2 posts, I don't like thin hoops. I've just owned more than one kit with them and never had a problem with any of them.

Which kits have you owned with 1.6 mm hoops and had them warp on you?

well i remember years ago i vowed never to buy a kit with 1.6mm hoops again. my first kit i bought with my own money saving up from a news paper route. i was 15yo then and it was a Crown 4 pc kit with red sparkle wrap i remember i bought at Seattle Music at downtown Seattle i had seen the small kit displayed in the window of the store. it had 1.6mm hoops as would be expected from a kit that only cost me $99 dollars at the time. well i played that cheap kit and it was my start of my experience of 1.6mm hoops. i was proud of it none the less as it was my starter kit. but yes the hoops were warped. later i was playing early Rogers drums and Pearl drums, then Ludwig, Slingerland drums as i grew older. some stood up better than others.

I've been playing 1.6 MM hoops on my Toms since 1988 when I bought my starter Swingstar kit.....not sure if they were a higher quality back then.

Whenever I change heads I check them on a flat surface.

Since I know what I'm doing I can get the hoops perfectly flat on %95 of the hoop.....but yes this problem is eliminated on Die Cast and reduced to a minimum on 2.3 MM hoops.

This is because you know what to look for. Many, many people might have problems tuning their 1.6mm hoops and still play them warped because they just have no idea of the situation.

i have a 30 year old ludwig kit,a roland electronic kit,and this january i bought a superstar hyper drive kit. the superstars are great. they sound and look good.hardware is excellent. as for someone saying the new silverstars sound better,i don't think there would be a difference if both series were the same sizes. and hoops may make a difference. personally,i like the die cast hoops...but am alittle curious about the silverstars. how do the suspension mounts mount? the diecast hoops actually have the holes for the system cast into the hoops. if the new silverstars mount via the lugs,no thanks. just a personal preference. but would seem a cheap way to suspend.not to mention stress for the price, sound, look and features,i love my Superstar hyper drives

Yamaha's Recording Custom have 1.6 mm hoops and look at how much they cost.

1.6 mm hoops will give you a more open sound and it does depend on what kind of metal they make them from and how they are made. Some companies in China use very lowgrade metal, you can get crappy 2.3mm hoops too.
