I received my add-on toms 8x7 and 13x10 from Japan (not China). Just wanted to let everyone know the quality is equal to the ones I received in 2009. It took 150 days to get it. I am still waiting for a 18x16 floor tom. Hopefully the earthquake doesn't slow down production.

Nope no floor tom yet. I am little disappointed but not surprised. Its been about 6 months. I was told it would be 150 days max. Not sure what it takes to get good service. I mean for the price of this drum I could buy an entire drum kit. Plus I am paying extra money to get it made in Japan! When I bought my kit it took around 7 months, the two add-on toms were about 150 days so I am not worried yet. I only put a $100 deposit so I haven't tied up a lot of money in it.

To be fair I have special ordered from other drum companies. My Pearl Reference snare took about 5 months (but the finish wasn't as good as TAMA). I ordered a Ludwig "the brick" snare drum on March 17. I was told Ludwig was shipping them out over a week ago. Still nothing. I special ordered a Sonor Ascent Beech snare Feb 24. I was told it wouldn't be shipping until mid July. I ordered a Pearl MCX Master Snare in piano black (which wasn't supposed to be a special order) on March 28th and it still hasn't come in.

I would love to know if there is a drum company out there that can make a drum in a reasonable amount of time. Guitar players don't have to put up with this non-sense of waiting a half a year to get an instrument made. I can't even go to a local drum store around NYC to buy drums because nobody seems to stock drums anymore. What do I need a local drum store for if they don't keep drums in stock?

I don't have photos yet since I don't have room to set-up the entire kit in my bedroom.

Leatherback...what dealer was the kit purchased at? I can't give you direct backorder information unfortunately, but I can at least reach out to the store and have them contact you for an update.

Sorry for the delay!!!

From the sound of it you must have ordered these through a chain like GC or Ash who hold orders until they have a bulk order to place with the company. I avoid these places for anything except emergency runs for small studio needs like cables or adapters.

I feel your pain, leatherback. If it's any consolation, I ordered a 2009 (Japanese-made) Starclassic Maple kit early last year and it took 180 days to get to my house. Unfortunately, a mistake was made with the order (wrong sizes) by the dealer or Tama which I discovered about 3 weeks prior to the 150-day mark, so two drums took an additional 150 days to get to my house. I'm not sure if that lessens the frustration you feel about your situation, but the Japanese-made Starclassic Maples are fantastic drums and it seems that a long wait is inevitable when custom-ordering drums from any manufacturer. Hopefully you'll be able to summon just a little more patience.

Like I said I am not really worried about. Eventually it will come and I only put $100 down on it. I didn't order it from GC. I ordered it from a well know internet company. The same company I bought the set from in 2009 and my 8" an 13" add-ons which I got this year. Drumset took 7 months, add-on took 5 months. At the end of this month it will be 7 months for the floor tom. I contacted the dealer and the response was basically there is nothing they can do to find out when it is coming. Still waiting on my Ludwig, Pearl, and Sonor snare drums. I am more --ed off with those companies because they come out with new products at the start of the year, then the dealers sell it to you, but they take forever to start making them. Next time I am going to wait until new items hit the street until I order any of them.
