Hello all! I am new to the forum, but have been drumming a soild 7 years. I recently decided to save up to replace my current ludwig 7 piece kit. I saw the Tama Silverstar, played on it, and was about to make the choise to get it when... I found the ddrum reflex series. I also found that my favorite drummer Dave Lombardo plays ddrum. So, I am in the predicament of choosing a kit. Both are in my price range, and I made a list to sort things out.
Ddrum Reflex:
2.3mm triple flange hoops :) :)
100% alder shells (sup. sounds like birch)?
Bass drum w/ no tom mount ("virgin"):)
deeper 20" bass drum :)
wrap :(

Tama Silverstar:
100% Birch shells :):)
Accel depth toms :)
LACQUER!!:)
regular triple flange hoops:(
have actualy played on it and sounds beast :)
Please Help! And just cause ur tama guys doesnt mean you cant like the ddrum kit better! WallThink

So I've also played on the Silverstars. They are good drums. The sound is awesome. Great punch. Nice lows. Lacquer is a huge plus. The only thing I do not like about them is the hoops. I have also messed around one time on the Reflex series. I personally think the Silverstars sounded better. Plus Tama makes the best hardware on the market. I would lean towards the Silverstars. Best of luck.

Thanks for the help! I am leaning toward the silverstars because I still have no idea what alder (the wood the reflex kit is made from) is.

Alder (botany): The common name of a genus of flowering plants (lat.: Alnus) belonging to the birch family (lat.: Betulaceae). The genus comprises about 30 species of monoecious trees and shrubs, few reaching large size, distributed throughout the North Temperate Zone and in the Americas along the Andes southwards to Argentina.
(source: Wikipedia)

So, Alder (in german: Erle) is a kind of birch wood. I heard/read some time alder is used for electric guitars and basses. But I never noticed it's been used for drums at all. So I don't have a clue what it sounds like. Could be it's a little cheaper than birch since it is not so sought after, but sounds close to birch.

Wow, that realy helped! Thanks! I have reached the conclusion of choosing the silverstars. Now, I have to get money and decide which way would be better to get them: A:Get the 6piece Silverstar custom in Transparent blue burst and custom order another 22" x 18" BD or B: just custom order everything (10 x 8 12 x 9 14 x 12 16 x 14 and two 22 x 18)with no snare. Which way would be cheaper? Im thinking A, but i dont need the snare...

Ask your local/favorite dealer for a quote of both ways. If (A) is cheaper (and that's what I think, too), get your set this way, and sell the snare via eBay as 'brandnew'. Make sure to sell it internationally - musical instruments are way more expensive anywhere outside the U.S. and Canada... which means if your customer is from Europe for example, you will earn some more money than from a U.S. customer. And this will cheapen your set once more.
