Hi,

I recently purchased a second hand 14" tom on eBay to use with a sterling sparkle 24/12/16 Starclassic Performer EFX kit I already have, since I prefer a larger rack tom. I believe the shell configuration I already have was only produced in 2005, perhaps also 2004, but not before that, according to the catalogs.

2002: http://www.tamadrum.co.j...hp?cat_id=139&now=6
2003: http://www.tamadrum.co.j...hp?cat_id=143&now=5
2005: http://www.tamadrum.co.j...hp?cat_id=145&now=6

Beforehand I checked the Tama catalog archive online and concluded the series, all birch shells with a Duracover wrap in this particular finish, were produced from 2002 until 2005. The catalog from 2004 is missing from the archive.

The drum was listed as having a 12" depth. According to the catalogs that diameter was produced in depths of either 11" or 12", but the drum I received seems to have a 13" depth, which, at least according to the catalogs listings, was never produced as such.

Besides, I'm not sure if the badges match. The badge on the drum I received looks like the first link (with the horizontal bar en several twirly lines), while, going from memory, I believe the kit might very well have badges that look like the second link. The badge on the new drum also seems to float slightly above the wrap, which I don't remember noticing before on the set.

Also, again going from memory, I think the seam of the wraps on the drums I already had were lined out to be under two lugs while on this drum it is out in the open in between lugs.

Otherwise the drum looks similar enough. The finish seems to match. The wood definitely looks pale like birch. The lugs / black Starcast mount / etc. I won't be able to actually compare them until Wednesday at our rehearsal space, so I am just trying to do some preliminary online research now.

Were different variations produced over the years? I have difficulties determinig anything conslusive from the various images in the catalogs, as they don't clearly show badges / seams / etc. Does anyone know any what these differences might imply? The serial number is 048411, if that might be of any help.

Any help would be welcome!

Thank you,

Timothy.

Disclaimer: No expert here. Many with more knowledge on this will hopefully chime in soon.

Badge link #2 is is typical for birch in the time frame mentioned. The badge (squirrely lines) I believe is much newer. I speculate that this badge was created around the time China became a manufacturing base for Starclassics. Maybe to enhance value. Who knows.

Be patient, the knowledgable side of the crew will get back to you.

Badge #2 is the same as the badges on my sterling sparkle kit (circa 2003). Badge #1 looks more the like the new ones.

Thank you for your responses! Some more research and AB comparison with the rest of my Starclassic Performer EFX kit has led to the conclusion that it actually concerns a Starclassic Performer from 1996 [http://www.tamadrum.co.jp/anniversary/expansion.php?cat_id=117&now=5], when the shells were 8mm rather than 6mm thick and consisted of Phillipine mahogany with an inner ply of birch, sloppily re-wrapped in a Sterling Sparkle cover. During this period 14" drums with a depth of 13" were indeed produced. Mmm.
