was looking at the clip i have enclosed here.was curious to know what drums billy is using here.they look to be imperialstars but im not sure.the snare drum looks to be an artwood but im not sure about that either.any help with this would be greatly apprecieated.i know that he mostly used superstar stuff from what i recall but this kit looks like something else.

Well he does play open handed and you kind of have to set it low. I know because I play open handed too. Try it, it's great fun.

i believe the hi hat is lower to accomodate both the ride cymbal and the china.

Yes that is correct but there is no need for the hi-hats to be raised up because your hands don't get in the way of each other. I know this because I play the same way. Here's a video of me playing and notice that I'm not using a ride cymbal, there was no need for it.

I find it funny just due to the Fibres have such an abilty to bark! Might just as well have played an Imperialstar!!

Easy Fibre, I play a '76 era Imperialstar set, and since putting EC2's on them, those mothers sing!!!! I am very pleased with them. They tune quiet easily now and sound amazing!
If this set is rockin', I can't hear you knockin'!!

the bottom head also plays a part in the resonance of the drum.i use an clear ambassador on the bottom with a clear pinstripe on the top and i get a nice big tone out of my swingstars. and if memory serves correctly imperialstars and swingstars are both made of mahogany.

They are made of Luan.. which is a very distant cousin of mahogany! It's a very soft wood but is fairly stable so it makes for a inexpensive drum shell. And Yes... Head selection can bring out the best in these shells. As far as my comment above... If you have ever heard a Fibrestar kit they are very hard to control and very loud, But.. if you want that deep mellow sound.. why wouldn't you use an Imperialstar? I think that when this Cobham video was taken the Fibrestar wasn't even available in the USA any more. The film might be in Europe.. not sure!! So promoting them isn't a big deal. Yet years later he goes back to the Superstars and records Warning and gets a very nice tone from them. He helped develop the Fibrestar becuase he wanted that old Fibes sound he got back in the early years.. Billy has always been IMO inconsistent with his sound and equipment!!

I will add that look up the video for Billy tuning his wonderful Cocobolo custom Gladstone kit with Evans heads. The sound he gets is IMO to die for!! Very Nice kit!!

from what I see it is his standard set in those days... which was:

12 x 8 Tom
13 x 9 Tom
14 x 10 Tom
15 x 12 Tom

14 x 14 Floor Tom
16 x 16 Floor Tom
18 x 16 Floor Tom

24 x 14 (main) Bass Drum
22 x 14 (left) Bass Drum

As far as I know he never set up the toms left handed. In those days he set up his set as a right hand player but played the hihat, the ride and china cymbals with the left hand. Nowadays he simply swapped the 12 and the 15 toms and adds here and there some smaller toms somewhere on the set-up...

Greetings
PIT... Happy

another thing that can effect the drum tone in a live setting is the reverb from the board.

his setup changed as the years went by.i dont know of any drummer who has played the same set of drums in the past 20 years no matter what brand they play or style of music they play.the basic set up may have similarities but tastes change.

actually he as been thru several set ups.there were at least two of his kits that had 3 bass drums on them(one superstar kit and a mapex kit which i saw him live with). before he started endorsing tama he played single kick(which he recorded inner mounting flame with)both the fibes kit and the fibrestar in the vid have 3 floor toms.from what i have seen these days he only uses two and he has changed the way he has mounted his toms.he has also gone from using standard toms to using power toms.the aformentioned mapex kit had three snares on it as well.
