Hello everyone. I just purchased one of these kits for $75, (I should say rescued) without the snare and stand but with everything else I assume. I have the Kick (22"), two rack toms (12 & 13") and the floor tom (16"). I do have the HH stand too. No other hardware besides a kick pedal and he threw in a cowbell! LOL.

The two rack toms do not have bottom hoops. Where could I find hoops that would fit? I looked on TAMA's website and they make new chrome hoops that have the same specs, but I was wondering if they would indeed fit?

I am also looking to get a vintage snare to complete the set (with stand). It would be nice. There isn't a ton of information available online. I also cannot find any sort of serial number on the thing. Any advice as to where that would be?

I would love to find the age. There is a thread here with a gorgeous copper-wrapped one that the owner said is from the 1970's; my kick drum has that same pitted striped large hoop on both sides as this one, but the TAMA insignia is the German-Cross looking one.

Anyway, that's all I have for now. I am in the process of cleaning it. It was filthy and needs heads throughout of course, but I am relieved to see that it is REALLY cleaning up nice! No rust on any of the metal parts, and even the original Black wrap just has a few scratches. The wood is in excellent shape with no divets whatsoever. That chrome REALLY looks gorgeous all polished up!

I will post some pics of the before-and after when I get them together.

Thanks for reading!!

PS: The badge I attached is similar to mine, except mine says ROYALSTAR; hopefully this helps with age. Unfortunately there is no serial number at bottom. I believe it is an RS695 by the research I've done.

Cool; you should post pics! I don't think these usually had serial numbers that were useful for determining age, so pics will help.

As for the tom hoops, any triple-flanged chrome hoops of the appropriate sizes (12" and 13") should work fine. Just make sure they have the same amount of lug holes as yours.

Cool! Here they are! BTW, my drummer played the heck out of them last night, and minus the heads they sounded great, and held up to his relentless pounding!!! Sorry for not the best pics, but I wanted to make sure to include pics of the hardware. The final pic you can see the insides of the drums on the rack toms:

So how old is this puppy?

Late 70`s. Tama introduced the Omni-Sphere mounting post in 1980, and you have the older ratchet-style with the smooth mount, so that would peg it at late 70`s (assuming it is original). Hard to get more accuracy than that without serial numbers other than researching what years Jet Black was available between 1974 and 1979 on the Royalstar line. Check out the old catalogs on the Tama History site.

Late '70's?! Holy Vintage Batman! Very cool! So what's something like this worth? Just curious. Not selling it, just going to give it lots of love. IT doesn't have the snare, just the pieces you see here.

Thanks for your help!!

Unfortunately, in this case, vintage does not necessarily mean valuable... Swingstars and Royalstars were pretty much then entry level kit in the 70's, though Royalstars generally had upscaled features from the Swingstars like mufflers, 10-lug kicks and snares, and better brackets. The shells were essentially the same, 9-ply phillipine mahogany (aka lauan) wrapped shells with zola-coating inside. The next step up was the Imperialstar, which was the same with improved hardware, cast hoops on snares, re-rings and serial numbers, all features aimed at the touring musician but still with lauan shells. The top of the line were the lacquered Superstars, different shell altogether (6-ply birch).

You got a good deal at 75$, no doubt, but a 4-piece in good shape with all parts might go for up to $300 IMO, or about $75 per piece. I tired to sell my 1984 9-piece with lacquer finish, couldn't even get $800 for it. There is a matching snare for your kit on Ebay right now, it's been there forever at $125, but a more reasonable price for it would probably be between $75-$90.

Wow! Thank you for all that!
Well, you know, just telling people you have a Vintage Tama they get those warm fuzzies. My drummer put it through its' paces last night and it really didnt' sound bad. I think with some nice heads it will really sing. I'm using it for my recording studio. More of a novelty than anything else, but honestly, it sounds better than some of what comes in here, so having clients use it will definitely be to my benefit sometimes.

So I basically got it for 75% off! LOL. I'm good with that. Even with the improvements and fixes, I'm still under $300, so I can't complain. Plus, it came with a kick pedal, single braced high hat stand and a nice cowbell.

Thanks for all your help!!!

The Tama hoops will work fine and are very close to origanal or search online drum parts suppliers they will also carry hoops that will fit just fine.

Royalfan pretty much took care of the rest, his price is pretty much spot on unfortunately Vintage Tama's are not very valuable and Tama collectors need to be picky about what they collect if your looking for rare or valuable. I have seen the Tama rarest go for peanuts and with this market it's even worse, well for the seller not the buyer!! You got a great deal on a kit that will last another 30 years if taken care of!! Have fun!!

Red,
No, I'm not unhappy at all. I wasn't looking for rare or anything, just a good useable kit I could make money with. That happened with this one! I'm pairing it with an early '80's LUDWIG Maple snare 6½"x14". My customers are already drooling!

I would think that any standard after-market hoop like Gibraltar will fit, as long as it has the right number of lugs. I've done that in the past with putting Gibraltar hoops on vintage Tama drums with no problems. You're actually very lucky that all the hard-to-find pieces are on your kit - the original adjustable floor tom legs, tom mufflers, kick spurs, drum post and even the memory locks!

I just remembered I picked up the exact snare for this kit at my local drum shop for $50 a few years ago, so I would say the matching snare should be worth no more than $75. Sorry, I ended up stripping it for parts :(. It also had an un-serialized Tama Royalstar badge that I put on a custom color-matched tom for my kit (since found the real thing), as well as 10-lug hoops and muffler that later went on an ImperialStar. I kept the strainer and lugs and returned the bare shell to the store.

RESOURCEFUL!

No I didn't hold out much hope for the stock snare, that's why I went with the vintage Ludwig, I got a good deal on it so it's now in my arsenal!
