I am restoring a late 1970's imperial star kit that had a splatter coat sprayed on the interior of the shells and would like to know where i can get some of this paint from. I don't know if they used more than one color or not but this splatter color has a gray/blue/white/cream color tones.

That is called a Zola coat and is on there to protect the shells from moisture and extreme dry conditions.I would just let it be.

Dave.. the zola coat inside the 70's drums is not unlike the spray coat used inside of many 60's - 70's GM car trunks.

Although I don't suggest you use those perticular spray coats...LOL, it might be worth investigating and reporting back to the forum on.

I did a 64 Pontiac Grand Prix trunk interior, and the Zola coat (style) spray actually came in a can ...? go fiquire.

Honestly.... check with Tama Tom or the company.... they are the best referance.

update to the Zola coat question. I just read a Tama history article that implies that the zola coat might actually be "trunk spray".

Go fiquire ?

here is the passage, and the link...

"The interiors of 1970s-80s Imperialstars, and most Swingstars and Royalstars, shared Zola-Coated inner shells. Nothing more than trunk paint, Rogers Drums and other U.S. companies had used a similar process to seal off uneven grain in the lower cost woods that comprised the lauan shells of the sub-lines."
