Hi,

I haven't played my Granstar Customs in years. They were taken out of their cases in 2006, cleaned and tuned and played for a few months, then put back into their cases. Like many I suppose, I found the deep toms and 22 bass a problem with my height and getting a comfortable playing situation happening. This kit was my first serious kit after I moved out of the house when I was 20 yrs old. I bought them brand new with cases around 1987/88.

diam x depth (all matching Cherry Wine lacquer finish)
14x6.5 SD
8x8 TT
10x10 TT
12x11 TT
13x12 TT
16x16 FT
22x16 BD

cherry-wine-finish
drumset-right
drumset-left
floortom
tom-badge
snare-badge
snare
drumset-front
snare-badge
drumset-front

The main reason for getting rid of them is that (a) I don't play them, and (b) I stored them for a number of years at significant cost, and so I don't want to be in a position to have to store them again.

I love the wood stained finish and the construction of these drums. I think they would look great with new hardware (I believe someone here said that Silverstar hardware is interchangeable), for example better hoops, maybe even gold or brass-plated hardware.

Also, is it difficult to resize these drums, since that seems to be the main reason I have another kit (Black Pearl Reference). I would think that a wood shop would be able to cut the shells down and create the proper bearing edges, right??

Steph (obviously I've lost my mind some of you are thinking right now...)

They did not sell :( I did have two people asking how much shipping would be. And after several hours work, came to the conclusion that I didn't want to risk losing a drum through Greyhound's GPX shipping service - the cheapest by far at one fourth the cost of UPS/FEDEX. I figured that if just one drum didn't make it to the buyer, the buyer would have the right to back out of the entire transaction, since they bid on a complete kit, not part of a kit. And who would pay for return shipping?

If I could specify no returns, even if one or two drums don't make it to them, then maybe that would work. I could take the insurance money after I paid the buyer for the drums that didn't make it. But then again, Greyhound shipments can sometimes take weeks, according to reports. And then the claim process would have to wait for them to do an investigation to find the missing shipment. And this is beside the fact that even if a seller specifies "no returns", there is "Ebay Buyer Protection", whatever that means. Probably a way to let the buyer backout someway.

Again, I spent several hours punching in numbers into UPS, FEDEX, and USPS websites, but in the end deciding I couldn't ship due to the risk.

Oh well, it's Craigslist time and talk to the local Guitar Center...

Peace,

Steph

i think the grommet placements would make them a poor candidate for cut downs

the vents would end up practically on top of the rims

Hey, I looked at the photos and the 12 and 13 definitely have room to be sized down. Even the 10, if sized down, would result in upper and lower lugs separation similar to the 8 tom.

I made sure to check the distance between grommets and bearing edge (from the photos). There might be an issue with having the new bearing edge too close to the next grommet, not enough to prevent tightening the head, but enough maybe to look noticeable.

Only the resize of the 10 tom would result in a vent hole noticeably close to the bottom hoop. Does anyone know if they could affect the sound. (I'm not really going to do this, so don't worry, be happy :))

Steph

I don't understand. Unless the drums sound lousy, why would anyone want to chop the shells? Is it because of current trends in shell style or sonics? If so, don't touch 'em. You'll regret it.

On the other hand, if the drums sound like poo, chop 'em up!

I definitely wouldn't do that.
Perhaps it's fair enough if you plan on keeping the kit forever.
Trouble is - too many people do that sort of thing only to get bored and sell it on. Then it's just been ruined.

SOLD!!!! I can't believe they're gone. A guy came over today, looked at them, and asked me if I would negotiate. He offered me $1000 and I took it!!

He put them into the back of his 1991 station wagon with great care. He wasn't some rich kid with a BMW throwing drums around from gig to gig.

I'm happy. I'm also sad. To see them go.

The End,

It's natural. Every thing I have ever sold, I wish I could get it back. There was a reason everything got sold at some point, and those reasons tend to disappear over the years (money, living space, family situation), so then you want it back. Cars, drums, boats, motorcycles... If I could have them all back it would be awesome.

I had an 87 Granstar as well brand new, 6 or 7 piece, that I sold in 94/95, so it crosses my mind to get one again.
