Ive noticed tons and tons of drummers who have no rod that sticks out the top of the hi hat? I have both the speed cobra and iron cobra hi hat stands..and the rods stick out significantly.. are thes guys chopping em off or what?

Clearly the lower pic shows the ching ring way too low.

Yes, hack saw. I then put a little rubber cap on it from Lowes/Home Depot, although its not really necessary. I also bought a used stand last year and the previous owner also hacked it down shorter.

Edit: I also round off the cut top with a Dremel tool, then put the cap on.

Same here. Dremel cutting wheel and grinder to round it off. Finished with 800-1500 grit papers.

If the rod isn't in your way, just leave it alone. My Yamaha hi-hat came with two different sized pull-rods. I use the shorter of the two.

Years ago, when I played a large kit, I just cut a few inches off of the rod with a hacksaw, 'cause it interfered with a tom's placement.

How low are you guys placing your hats?
After I place my drop clutch on the rod there is only about 1" of it sticking up.

How much of the rod are you cutting off?

Are they not called "HIGH" hats?
I'm mainly asking because If I were to buy a used high hat stand anywhere down the road, a "cut off" rod would probably be too short for me,

They're called "hi-hats", and formerly called the low boy I think.

I took a couple of inches off. My hats aren't as low as your drums are angled there, dp.

I keep mine super low... right above my snare, and my ride is on the left just above the hi-hats. But I am short and like to sit above everything as much as possible. I actually cut it down when I was messing around with placing a set of bongos on a stand over my hi-hats and ride.

I made me a short rod (some 20ish cm long) and kept the original rod. For some reason it was quite a task finding a 6mm rod with M6 thread although I have a lot of metal parts at home. I finally found one in an old moped front shock absorbers :) Patience paid off.
I don't like irreversably modifying stuff that's not broken. Now the original rod lays somewhere in the hardware bag, all shiny and... Unused :)
