Started wrapping a Silverstar kit which will be sold to a perspective buyer. We went with a faux leather vinyl that is thin yet retains the look AND feel of the real thing. To wrap the 22 12 14 16 shells the wrap cost $150, new maple hoops $120 which I sprayed with a clear lacquer. Best of all the wrap had PSA so no glue... Strong as heck and I need to make sure I positioned it right the very first time. Once stuck it was stuck! Aside from that it was super easy to work with.

Kick and 12" tom are done. Here's a few pics. Full kit pics to follow soon.

Wow, really classy! Silverstars are great because they are already stained, so this faux leather sets that off nicely. Looks thick even though you say it's not. The hoops give it the vintage vibe.

Where did you get the material from? I'd like to try wrapping a bass hoop similar to what DW offers (less the stitched seam).

That is a great look. I've seen one done in a fake alligator hide, and it looked great as well.
My only concern would be would it reduce the resonance of the shells ?

I hear ya, but how is this different than any other wrapped shell? This material is thinner and bonded 360 around the shell.

But, once complete I plan on recording a clip with video :)

Very impressive! I love the look!

At a 1.22mm thickness, I'm really curious if it affects the sound of the drums. I don't know anything about wraps in general, and have avoided them on my last two kits (spanning 20 years). I just figured a wrap of any kind affects the sound of the drum, especially floor toms. Looking forward to a full review.

Your average Delmar drum wrap is 1.32, give or take. The kits that I have that are wrapped sound fantastic, and when done the right way the wrap become a finish ply. Nonetheless, I will record a sound and video sample with unaltered audio when it's done. Thus far the two toms a kick sound fine to me.

What else do ya do when you're home sick as hell?

Recorded with a GoPro Hero4 Music, no audio processing of any kind added. Prolly a good idea to listen with headphones or good speakers.

The shells had a lacquer finish originally. If they were wrapped I would have removed it first. But, Tama glues their wrap 100% around the shell

So, to *ME*... the main difference between this vinyl wrap and a typical drum wrap is rigidity.

Using dumbed-down physics, I would think that a rigid sheet of drum wrap material that is bent into a cylindrical shape has at least *SOME* resonant quality... at the very least MORE resonance that an adhesive-vinyl material bent into that same cylindrical shape.

If I had to make some WILDLY assumptive statements, I would say that if wrapping a nice wooden shell (full-contact adhesion with a glue that crystalizes) with a fairly-rigid drum wrap might decrease resonance by (arbitrarily) 2% (two percent)... then wrapping that same shell with a vinyl material that has NO resonant properties and is extremely flexible (as well as its adhesive) and that will ABSORB energy might decrease resonance by 5% (five percent).

Think of it like this: Look what MoonGel does to the resonance of a head. It is a material that is very flexible and can ABSORB a lot of kinetic energy. If you adhered a piece of RIGID material of the same mass (a nickle?) to the same spot on the head, my best-educated-guess would be that it would not dampen the overtones *AS MUCH* as the MoonGel.

The only reason I am even making this point is; I am guessing that the results of adhering that vinyl to the shell most-likely ARE reducing the resonance of the shell(s) and more dramatically than a full-contact, rigid wrap... but it's probably LESS inhibiting than the cheapo wraps that are only adhered at the top-edge and seam... using the lugs to primarily keep it secure... THAT will dampen the shell more than a fully adhered vinyl wrap (total speculation on my part - no science was used in creating this theory) :)

I would think (I don't know for sure) that Silverstar shells are not hugely resonant to begin with and the bulk of your sound/tone will come from head choice and tuning... thus the Vinyl wrap is PROBABLY not affecting the tone as much as it would on -- say -- a Star Maple kit. :)

---

Either way, regardless of what it does to the final sound, I kinda like the look of it.
