Here are the recent 8x8, 10x10 and 12x11 toms I scored to add to the big red Artstar II. They'll all be going under the sandpaper soon, I'll keep you all posted on the progress. Interestingly, they are the three different generations of the Artstar II line, the 12" is the first generation from 86 with the polyurethane coating on the inside of the shell, the 8" is of the second generation from around 90, and the 10" is of the last generation produced from around 92/93. All evident in the different mounting brackets.

2005 Starclassic Performer (100% Birch) - 10x9, 12x10, 13x11, 14x12, 15x13, 16x16, 18x16, 24x18, 24x18 in 'Transparent Black' stain.
86 to 92 Artstar II - 8x8, 10x10, 12x11, 13x12, 14x13, 15x14, 16x15, 16x16, 18x16, 24x16, 24x16 in 'Hot Red' lacquer.
2005 Swingstar 10x8, 12x9, 14x11, 22x18, 14x5.5, snare in Black wrap

The tom mounting bracket also gives it away... Those late period Artstars shared the same memory lock bracket that the Starclassics also had for a long time (until '05 on the toms and until recently on the floor toms).

Awesome score, man!

I like the MTB30 and 50 - they are a very similar design with the hinge.

The other tom mount i don't care for.

I hope the MTB30 will continue in production and be transferred to another line rather than being discontinued.

If anyone has any spare MTB50's laying around and they're willing to sell them, I'll take them. I'm going to convert these two toms back to the first generation mount. Drilling and plugging job, call me crazy if you may but I always preferred them, I'm a sucker for the big lever look Dance

Me too Jim. Many people complained about them in the past but they have always worked well for me. Just don't over tighten them - that seems to be the problem from what i can see.
The lever makes it really easy to adjust.

Look forward to seeing the finished project.

Hey CB,

If you're talking about the shell construction? The Artstar II was 100% Canadian Hardrock Maple, in the case of these toms, 9 ply 7mm. As for the urethane finish, I'll remove it. I did it with my 15x14 and 24x16 which are of the first generation also (see the Dave Grohl kit thread), and boy what a job it is. It's very thick and it destroys sandpaper like nothing! I'm not a fan of it personally. Good on Tama for getting rid of it on the next gensClap

I wouldn't mind seeing a photo of the interior of the 12" tom. Is it very smooth? What colour is the interior?

Here's a pic of the inside on one of the bass drums that has the same black polyurethane interior. I would describe it as being a sort of matte version of the exterior colour of the particular drum. For example the 15x14 was originally in a piano white lacquer, which meant the interior was the matching matte white polyurethane coating.

It feels kind of coarse/textured I suppose, they must have sprayed it on really thick when they made them because I had to dig down a few layers to reach the wood grain. Lets just say that it made more of a mess than the lacquer I stripped on the outside!..

Nice nostalgia kit. I've only seen one in person. When I saw, I thought "wow Cool" solid. Years later. I just say "wow has technology advanced"
Now it just makes me think of the Rino-liner in the bed of of truck...

That's why I love this kit, because it reminds me of the drums from my childhood. That's one of the reasons I chose that particular colour also. You could even call it '80's red', the whole thing is a work of nostalgia, even to the people in the audience who don't know a thing about drums. The first thing they say is 'man those drums are huge', I'd say because you never see kits like this, or of these size shells anymore. It IS something different now, even though it's been done years earlier in a different generation.

Hello all, just thought I'd post some updated pics of my big Artstar II kit. It's multi coloured at the moment but I plan on refinishing the whole thing in red (as seen on some the drums) this year. The only other drum I'm wanting to add is a gong bass from that era, I'd sit it next to the floorDance. The sizes are:

8x8, 10x10, 12x11, 14x13, 16x15, 18x16, 24x16, 24x16

the snare pictured is an AW526 which I'll most likely use with it.

Haha, I know right, interesting point however. I'm not sure if I'll go with the waaay thicker Aquarian Performance II's (they tend to have a dull thud) or revert back to the brighter Remo Pinstripes? (always trusted).

I like the rainbow lollipop look. Add a green tom and you're good to go.

It's funny, it's like an ebay work of art, all of those multi coloured drums were the years take from ebay. Allot of swindling and persuasion went into getting my hands on 'em. Almost all of them were from complete kits that sellers were reluctant to break up to sell individually..

Does anyone know what the matching gong bass drum would be for this kit from that era? ...Aje?
