Well, I've kinda been thinking about adding an 18 tom for a while, and it seems like the SIB (Smokey Indigo Burst) color is getting more rare these days. I really love my Performer B/B kit, and I think SIB is da bomb. I decided I better try to get one now rather than wait until they are no longer available at all. I contacted our frequent poster and all around helpful dude, Yogi (@yogi98) about a custom order for the 18 and he set me up. The wait is long (150 days / 5 months), but I think it will be pretty cool to have a slightly different variation on the typical Performer B/B setup. Thanks to Yogi and Forks Drum Closet for setting me up. The wait is gonna feel like forever. :)

I originally ordered the Indigo Burl Burst and when it arrived, one of the drums was cracked. Since it was a limited edition, they couldn't order a new one, so they replaced the kit with a color of my choice. I decided to go with SIB and couldn't be happier. It is a true wood finish, where the Burl Burst is a lacquer synthetic finish. And limited edition? Not for me anymore after that fiasco.

I agree about limited finishes, plus you cannot order anything else, such as the 18". The synthetic part, I've never heard Tama confirm that, but if true it would be disappointing in the sense that I would have felt misled if I bought one. The burl seemed like an 'exotix' type finish, where synthetic is almost just a wrap with lacquer over it.

I can confirm for you that for the Performer B/B kit it is a painted on finish, not true burl wood. I had the kit for a couple weeks negotiating a resolution to the problem. It looks good, and it is a lacquer finish, but it is not wood showing through, it is a clever synthetic.

Apparently they refer to is as a "cultured gravure wood grain material". I'm not sure what that means, but "gravure" is a printing process.

Had to look at youtube for that... possibly a very thin clear wrap that has a printed grain on it using a pressing process. Then I guess it is overlaid over real wood to give the appearance of the fancy grain. Uhg. So it's not like the Mappa Burl snare drums, which are real.

I see there is brown burl burst kits as well, so there are two fake wood finishes out there.

I agree it would be cool if it was real, but I'm sure the price would be higher. They do it on their snares, but I haven't seen it on even the higher end kits.

The tom finally arrived! Dance
It arrived in perfect condition, even though it was in a thin plastic bag in a single ply box.
It is also a perfect match to my other drums and in fact from the markings on the box and UPC tag, it looks like it was probably manufactured around the same time and has been sitting in a warehouse for a while.
(That begs the question - why five months?)
Regardless, I'm happy with the look and the sound and I think it's a nice addition to an already great kit.
Thanks Yogi for your help in obtaining it!

Play on!

I want to post some pics, but since PhotoBucket decided to hold all of our photo's for ransom, I'm not sure how (this site won't accept my https links from iCloud or anywhere else, and it doesn't support uploads).
Anyone have a solution to this? I would think the forum admins would might be concerned.

This is strange. Photobucket let's me on through my signatures and by going straight to the site. I can upload but can't download.Think
The only way I can figure out how to share pics for now is through social media, fb in my case. I Copy the link but I have to paste directly in the reply box. The only way I can figure out for this forum to accepting the link.
